Here's an interesting news update. You may recall the saga that started when jockey Norberto Arroyo was arrested during track season 2009 in Saratoga Springs for possession of cocaine. Since that arrest he spent time incarcerated in Kentucky and Florida on charges of aggravated domestic battery and a bench warrant for failure to appear for driving while license is suspended or revoked. Flash forward to today, and you can see on the New York State Department of Corrections web site that, after being sentenced in July, Arroyo started serving his term for the drug charges at Lakeview shock incarceration facililty, a minimum security prison about 50 miles southwest of Buffalo. The Corrections web site inmate lookup page lists Arroyo's parole date as occurring in January of 2012, just a year from now, and an "earliest release date" of August, 2012.
Finally, It was originally reported that Arroyo's license to race in this state was suspended by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board. I did some checking and found out that his "suspended" status has since been changed to more permanent status of "revoked". I understand Arroyo is a talented jockey and he will likely be out of prison by next year, but it doesn't look like he has a future in New York, at least any time soon. Let's hope that when he gets out of prison he stays on the right path and finds peace and success somewhere, wherever and in whatever that endeavor is.
