I wrote a while back about a new restaurant opening in the former Pacific Rim/Shanghai Grill location at 175 South Broadway which a sign showed would be called "Duo Japanese Cuisine and Bar".
In that posting, I questioned the need for yet another Asian themed restaurant in town, but was unknowingly hinting that this place was going to be a bit different. I wrote that the place was going to be called the "Duo Restaurant and bar", and I also wrote that the font on the sign was "funky". Well, if you go to Duo's new web site, you will see that that the word "bar" in the establishment's name has been replaced by the perhaps more upscale term "lounge", the words "modern" and "cuisine" are utilized, and the music being played on the site is, well, again, funky. Funky sushi on South Broadway! Get your funk on at Duo! Anywho, as mentioned in this entry's title, you'll notice that the web site says the place is opening "soon", and it has a link to their menu that seems different and a bit pricier than the downtown Asian restaurants, namely Pacific Grill, Sushi Thai Garden and it's sister restaurant Phila Fusion.
Duo's South Broadway building is large to the point of being cavernous, so good for the owners for having a compatible vision for the place and utilizing that space to allow for a comfortable lounge atmosphere as well as a dining area. It sure seems like they are planning a sophisticated venue - I wonder if they will have live entertainment? Well anyway I wish them luck - perhaps Duo will be the start of a turnaround for South Broadway. God knows it needs one.
