I was on Regent Street here in Saratoga Springs recently and I took a few photos of some interesting houses and buildings which I'll share below. The first picture needs some background explanation - there are two churches that have been converted to residences that are very prominently situated on the East side of Saratoga Springs. One is at the corner of Caroline and Circular Streets, and the other is at the corner of Spring and Regent Streets (second picture below). The church building pictured immediately below is one I never saw before because it is small and simply nestled in between houses at 206 Regent Street, up near Lake Ave. It is pretty neat looking and I believe it is now a private residence.
Then I saw the new house at 211 Regent (across the street from the former church) pictured below. Last year this location was just an empty lot, but a company called Rejuvination Homes built a nice house and garage there. It sure looks like a nice home in a great location, but the $619,000 asking price still seems steep in this economy. At least it seemed steep until I saw movers bringing furniture into the place earlier today when I jogged by, telling me the place did indeed sell, or perhaps the company is bringing in some nice furniture for staging purposes.
Moving South from there on Regent Street, across Spring Street, you will see a picture below that I took a few years ago of 153 Regent Street. The unique looking building sits between Spring Street and Union Avenue, and in recent years has been the home of different organizations, many related to the arts. According to my "Hoofing It" book, a walking tour guide of Saratoga Springs published by the
Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation,, 153 Regent Street is a 15,400 square foot building that was built in 1903 as the Young Women's Industrial Club, the precursor to Skidmore College. I believe the building currently has a number of tenants, but it still appears underutilized and partially empty. It has two large signs from Larkin Realty attached to the front of the building advertising available space.
Going South from 153 Regent Street, there are the beautiful new and old buildings owned by Empire State College at the intersection with Union Avenue. Continuing south on Regent, you will notice the Beagle School (a preschool) and one of the builings used by the Waldorf School, an independent school that, according to it's web site, is "for children from birth to Grade 12". The school also has buildings on Lake Avenue and one on York Avenue.
Well that's it for now on Regent Street - It's certainly a nice part of the city. If you aren't familiar with it, I suggest you take a walk or ride down it and enjoy the interesting sites.
That's my old block. I lived next door to the "Museum". There's a little glimpse of my building in your photo.
Did you know that my building was the former gymnasium of Skidmore college? If you look up towards the top of the building from the parking lot, you'll see relief sculptures of woman in action.
I took yoga classes next door. When I left, there were a few companies in the building and a pottery studio that had recently closed. It's a great space. There are apartments on the upper floors.
I used to walk up Regent all of the time, towards Lake. Loved that yellow house that was once a church.
Thanks for the road down memory lane.

If the house on Regent hasn't sold yet, you can buy it and have plenty of room for your family from Buffalo to come visit!

Hi Ellen - that's great - thanks for that info. Let me know when you're back in town and we'll finally meet for that coffee. Hope all is well down in the lower Hudson Valley. Actually Gale, we should talk soon about coming to visit and plan it - track season is soon!.

One more thing, Dan.
Our apartment was a duplex and the first floor was all wood flooring which was actually part of the gym floor/basketball court. You could see the goal lines. It was a pretty cool detail.
If we do get a chance to come visit, I'll let you know so we can have our long overdue coffee.

Hey Dan-
An interesting Blog topic for a future posting: Churches that have been converted to residences in the Spa City. There are actually 4 (that I can think of) in that area that were converted. The Yellow Church on Regent, The other one you have a picture of on Spring & Regent, 110 Spring Street (which is mid-block, next to the old School No. 4 (now 112 Spring Street)), and the one at Circular and Caroline (Stone Abbey). My guess is that there is more, but I can't think of any right now.
Great Post...as usual.
